Golden Gumboot Challenge Returns

After a 28-year-hiatus, the Murrumbateman Field Days Golden Gumboot Challenge is coming back this year…. and we are looking for the past winners!

The Gumboot throwing competition was a firm favourite at the Field Days in the mid-90’s, but was soon replaced with Boomerang throwing. It even involved a failed Guinness World Record attempt… but never the less the lengths thrown were very impressive.

Whilst rummaging through our archives, we found an old gumboot trophy from 1995/96. With the help of local historian, Tim the Yowie Man, we have managed to identify the past winners of the men’s, women and children’s competitions.

We are now inviting back the 1995 and 1996 winners to defend their title – with a free entry to the Field Days for all past champions!

Can you help find them? Surely some are still in the Yass Valley and Canberra region?

1995 winners

Ladies: Vicki Brown (24.16m)

Men: David Spackman (33.6m)

The Countdown Is On: Check Out the Final Lineup!

The countdown is on as the final line up of events for the weekend is announced! Tom White, Manager of the Field Days, said: “This year, we have an exciting mix of farming equipment and agricultural exhibitors, along with family favourites like the Hawkesbury Working Sheep Dogs and Noah’s Racing Pigs. We have a great mix of old and new technology, with the Yass Antique Machinery Club showcasing their historic farming equipment, and over 300 exhibitors presenting many of the latest Ag Tech products. It’s a fantastic way to explore the past, present, and future of agriculture.”  New for 2024, the Telstra Tech Alley will highlight the impact of technology on rural communities and showcase how cutting-edge innovations are revolutionising farming practices.   The Komatsu Demonstration Area is now bigger and better, featuring hands-on experiences with the latest Intelligent Machine Control and GPS technology. Visitors can even try the excavator simulator and test these advanced machines before making a purchase.  Kids will have a blast in the Hutcheon & Pearce Fun Zone, where they can drive a John Deere pedal tractor, while adults can test their golf skills with the ‘Big Putts Challenge’—a thrilling twist on traditional golf using a compact excavator to putt a giant ball. It’s a great way to entertain the family while checking out the latest farm machinery.  What else is on?  There’s plenty of extra excitement beyond the main attractions. Visitors can enjoy stage entertainment featuring local musicians and dance troupes. For the little ones, Outback Pony Rides and the Kids Farmyard Trail offer fun, hands-on experiences. Witness Brumby demonstrations that showcase these magnificent horses, and younger children can enjoy the Old Kentucky Animal Farm for a hands-on encounter with farmyard animals. There will be agricultural drone displays on the oval, while Durkins Amusements provides a range of rides, including dodgem cars, the Cha Cha, a giant slide, cup and saucer rides, and a jumping castle. Additionally, livestock exhibitors will be showcasing their adorable Babydoll sheep and impressive Galloway cows, making for a well-rounded day of family-friendly activities.  Over 16 community groups will be providing catering and event services across the site, to ensure visitors have a great day out. Last year, the Murrumbateman Field Days—run by the local Murrumbateman Community Association—ploughed nearly $70,000 back into the Yass Valley community, thanks to volunteer support.  Adult day tickets are $25, youth are $12, family day passes are $60, and kids under 10 enter for free. Concession and weekend passes are also available. Tickets can be purchased at mfdays.com/tickets. Field Days to Boost Agritourism with NSW Government Funding

The award-winning Murrumbateman Field Days will enhance its agritourism promotion in the Illawarra, Hume Corridor and Far South Coast regions, thanks to a $20,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Regional Event Fund. This funding, part of a $1.3 million initiative supporting 66 events across NSW, will help extend the event’s reach and attract more visitors. Tom White, manager of the Murrumbateman Field Days, stated the grant, managed by Destination NSW, would boost the event’s profile and increase visitation for the 2024 event, scheduled for October 19-20. “This funding allows us to attract more people from south Sydney and coastal regions, showcasing our attractions and the beauty of the whole Yass Valley region,” White said. The Murrumbateman Field Days, the largest event in the Yass Valley and key supporter of the Destination Southern NSW agritourism strategy, are crucial for promoting the local farming industry, supporting the hospitality and wine industries, and engaging local businesses and community groups. Last year, the event generated over $7.3 million for the local economy and $44 million for the wider Australian economy. Mr White highlighted the grant’s significance, noting that it supports not only Murrumbateman but also other AAFDA Field Days like Henty and Tocal. He said: “This funding is a great boost for regional agritourism, reinforcing the importance of Field Days in rural business and tourism strategies.” Conveniently located off the Barton Highway, and close to the Hume, the event is accessible for visitors from Sydney and the Southern Highlands, and is an easy drive from Canberra, the Riverina, the South Coast, and the Snowy Mountains. Tom concluded: ‘With this grant the Murrumbateman Field Days will now be able to offer regional NSW farming industries a greater chance to benefit from increased promotional activities and will help showcase the best of our local rural region’.
