Winners of the Telstra Tech Innovation Award!

This year, we invited AgTech innovators to showcase their innovative products designed to improve farming and rural living. The response was amazing, with many creative entries highlighting the ingenuity and innovation within the AgTech community. Congratulations to winner AgtechData for their app that eliminates the need for paper files by capturing essential farming data. It helps track chemical usage, livestock traceability and workplace health and safety — all in one place. The award was presented by Christina Cawkill, Telstra Regional Engagement Manager, to Landon Hodgkinson from AgtechData, who shared: “The app was designed and tested on my own farm in the Yass region. It digitalises all your agriculture paperwork for traceability and biosecurity, and it’s all on a live system. Thank you to Telstra and the Murrumbateman Field Days for this award – and a great event!” A special commendation went to Matt Smoker from Mozzie Fire for their lightweight portable bushfire protection system. Commended for the simplicity of the design, Matt explained: “After my wife and kids were caught in a bushfire during the 2020 fires, we realised we needed better protection for our family that ‘wives at home’ could easily use. We designed a sprinkler solution that’s easy to deploy quickly by one person in any area close to a water source. Thank you to Telstra for the award!” The Tech Innovation Award, proudly sponsored by Telstra, highlights advancements in technology that support rural businesses and agriculture – an effort Telstra is actively supporting in rural communities. This initiative supports the growth of the Murrumbateman Field Days ‘Tech Hub’ area which showcases technology that advances agriculture and rural businesses. If you missed out this year, don’t worry! Keep an eye out for information on next year’s Tech Innovation Award and more opportunities to showcase your AgTech innovations. PIctured (L-R): Landon Hodgkinson, AgTechData; Christina Cawkell, Telstra; Matt Smoker, Mozzie Fire.

Field Days success a boom for local economy

This year’s Murrumbateman Field Days has been heralded as a major success as the sun shone on the 15,000 visitors who streamed through the gates over the weekend.   The 2023 Murrumbateman Field Days ran from 21-22 October and showcased over 300 exhibitors, with the hot ticket items ranging from tractors and mowers, to water tanks and transportable houses.   Aside from the regular attractions, the Field Days introduced new highlights such as camel rides, George the Farmer, Farmer Dave and his performing dogs, and a big yellow digger. The event also featured drone displays and snake demonstrations that attracted crowds four people deep. Tom White, Murrumbateman Field Days Manager, expressed his elation with the event’s turnout and said that the local economy benefited immensely from the influx of visitors. “We welcomed over 15,000 visitors over the weekend, with an additional 2,000 volunteers, exhibitors and supporters onsite enjoying the event,” said Tom. “The exhibitors reported high sales this year, with visitors spending money on both big and small items.”  The success of the Field Days was evident as local businesses such as YLess4U and Taylex Tanks reported a significant increase in their sales and enquiries. Septic Science, a water treatment company and a regular Field Days exhibitor, said via Facebook that Saturday was ‘the biggest show they had ever had’.  The Murrumbateman Community Association, which oversees the event, was grateful for the support of the 15 community organisations and all the volunteers who helped deliver the Field Days. “For most, this is their largest fundraising event of the year, so all the money raised at the Field Days goes back into the local community,” said Iain McCall, the association’s president. ‘We couldn’t do it without them”.    Planning for the Murrumbateman Field Days 2024 is already underway and will take place on 19-20 October.

Scammers Target Exhibitors

We are aware that exhibitors, not only from the Murrumbateman Field Days but the wider Field Days community, have recently been the target of phishing scammers. Potential scammers are contacting organisers, exhibitors and attendees claiming to have visitor or attendee lists which they will sell for a price. The Association of Agricultural Field Days of Australian (AAFDA) have flagged this with the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, saying: “Scams are getting more sophisticated, and scammers use technology to harvest emails and personal information from the internet”. Exhibitors should note that Murrumbateman Field Days, AAFDA and its members do not sell attendee/registration lists, nor do we authorise any third party to distribute or sell any related lists to our events. If you receive an email offering to sell you a list of attendees, do not respond to it. By responding, even with a request to unsubscribe, you confirm that your email address is a valid one. This may increase the likelihood that you’ll be contacted again. If you wonder how they got obtained your email address, software programs crawl websites in search of email addresses that are listed on them (identifiable by the “@” sign). If you become aware of any potential scam activity, you can report scams to www.scamwatch.gov.au.
